The Term "Transvestism"

Robert J. Stoller, MD

Arch Gen Psychiatry. 1971;24(3):230-237.

Abstract

Current terminology in psychiatry has accepted "transvestism" not only as a term, but also as a diagnosis. A review is presented of clinical data on behavior which is classified as "transvestism" as it is used in the literature. In each case I suggest that it is wrongly being used as a diagnosis and not as a symptom of deeper-lying psychological disorders.
