Drug Use and Life-Style Among 500 College Undergraduates

Paul A. Walters, Jr, MD; George W. Goethals, EdD; Harrison G. Pope, Jr

Arch Gen Psychiatry. 1972;26(1):92-96.

Abstract

Questions relating to drug use and life-style were asked a representative sample of 500 college seniors. No differences were found between users and nonusers in relation to grades, athletics, and activities. Instead, drug use was found to be related to differences in self-concept, values, and attitudes as suggested by subjective alienation, visits to a psychiatrist, less definite career plans, and sexual activity. All of these characterized the user before he began drug use, and were unrelated to his "official" college life.
