Abstract
Without knowledge of electroencephalographic results, the histories of 219 consecutive psychiatric admissions were evaluated for presence and degree of (1) suicidal ideations, (2) suicide attempts, and (3) assaultive-destructive behavior. Patients displaying significant symptomatic suicidal and/or destructive behavior were contrasted in terms of EEG results with a control group of patients totally free of suicidal or assaultive symptoms. Results indicated that, for both males and females, there was a positive, significant association between paroxysmal EEGs and suicide ideation alone, suicide ideation plus attempts, and assaultive-destructive behavior without a suicidal component.
