Prefrontal Cortex and Schizophrenia

A Quantitative Magnetic Resonance Imaging Study

Abstract

Objective
To measure prefrontal cortical volume in a group of schizophrenicsubjects who presented with mainly positive symptoms and whowere previously shown to have volume reductions in left temporallobe structures.

Method
Fourteen men with chronic schizophrenia and 15 male controlsubjects were matched for age, IQ, handedness, and parentalsocioeconomic status. Magnetic resonance images were obtainedby means of a 1.5-T magnet, and contiguous 1.5-mm slices ofthe entire brain were obtained.

Results
No significant differences were found between schizophrenicand control subjects in mean values for prefrontal white orgray matter on either the right or the left side. However, withinthe schizophrenic group, there was evidence of a relationshipbetween the volumes of left prefrontal gray matter and lefttemporal lobe structures that was not present in the controlgroup.

Conclusions
At least in this group of schizophrenic subjects with mainlypositive symptoms, temporal lobe abnormalities can exist inconjunction with no gross volumetric abnormalities of the prefrontalcortex.
