IT IS a distinct honor but a humbling responsibility to be appointed the fourth Editor of the Archives of General Psychiatry since its creation in 1959. This issue begins the publication of manuscripts that were submitted, reviewed, and accepted under my role as Editor.
In the first issue of the ARCHIVES, Roy Grinker, MD, the founding Editor (1959-1970), published a brief statement about the purpose of the new journal:
We shall publish contributions from all disciplines . . . that are related to the study of the behavior of Man in health and illness. We shall attempt to implement the concept that Man's behavior cannot . . . be viewed profitably from a narrow frame of reference. Instead it requires a broad vision of a totally integrated field.
The 2 subsequent Editors, Daniel X. Freedman, MD (1970-1993), and Jack D. Barchas, MD (1994-2001), continued this tradition of excellence and broad . . . [Full Text of this Article]
