ON JULY 27, 1890, Vincent van Gogh (1853-1890) died in the arms of his brother Theo at 1:30 AM, poignantly saying to Theo, "if it could always be like this."2 He died 29 hours after staggering back to his hotel in Auvers, France, after shooting himself in the chest.2 He had gone out to paint immediately after breakfast 2 days before, taking a gun with him that he used to keep crows away when he worked.
