Affective Temperament: A Mediating Variable Between Environment and Clinical Depression?

In the interesting study by Neumeister et al,1 they found that behavioral responses to tryptophan depletion (TD) were affected by a polymorphism in the promoter of the serotonin transporter gene (5-HTTLPR) in patients with remitted major depressive disorder and healthy controls. Among the 26 controls, TD induced an increase in Hamilton Depression Rating Scale total scores from baseline to 7 hours after the ingestion of the amino acid mixture in S/S and L/S but not in L/L carriers. Similarly, controls also showed increased anxiety scores in the S/S and L/S subgroups but not in the L/L subgroup.1
