In response to a suggestion by Paul E. Meehl in which he contrasted the "cookbook" method with "the rule of thumb" procedure for interpreting the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI), this book came into being. Since it provides specific rules for obtaining data useful to the clinician, it might be facetiously termed "diagnostic cookbook"; however, the authors have appropriately dignified it with the title of Atlas. Within this Atlas, the nuclei for psychological assessments are 16 MMPI profiles identified by code number. Available for each of these are descriptive characteristics which may be attributed to those with profiles fitting the required specifications. Emphasis is placed on the fact that this simple procedure is not recommended at the cost of validity. Actually the opposite appears to be true when the MMPI is the only psychometric instrument employed.
