Again Erikson is giving the "Zeitgeist" its due: all his writings are pervaded by heavy draughts of actuality. Thus, "Zeitgeist" was midwife to his latest book, Insight and Responsibility, as it must be to all relevant statements. Physicists, as Oppenheimer put it, have "known sin" and it came to them in dramatic fashion. But so did psychoanalysts and possibly most behavioral scientists have knowledge that rests heavily on their soul, antithetically to its supposed liberating effect. Anatol Rapoport just published Strategy and Conscience, a critique of rationalism undiluted as a guide to those who guide our destiny. Another, and to psychiatry much more relevant event, is a project by a group of workers in political science, sociology, and psychiatry to gather, sift, examine, and evaluate the evidence of the social and ethical impact psychiatric activity has had on the American scene in the 1960's.
