MEDFIELD State Hospital, in 1961, had a total patient population of approximately 1,200. Approximately 25% of the population was diagnosed as schizophrenic, was 60 years of age or younger, and had been hospitalized for at least one year on their current admission. A rehabilitation program began at the hospital as of Sept 1, 19615; this program was designed to treat a sample of this schizophrenic population. This paper reports the results of that rehabilitation program after an experimental period of 30 months, ending March 1, 1964.
Method
1. Selection of Subjects.—The subjects were 236 patients from the Medfield State Hospital, diagnosed as schizophrenic, 60 years of age or younger, and hospitalized for at least one full year on their current admission.* Each patient in this category was matched with another patient according to age, sex, diagnosis, length of hospitalization, educational background, and
