RESULTS ON four hospitalization outcome criteria, with four-year follow-up, are here summarized for three mixed-sex cohorts of consecutive, 1956-1959 (drug era) adult true-first admissions to Fulton State Hospital-schizophrenic (N=139), geriatric (cerebral arteriosclerosis and senile brain disorder of age 55+, N=183), and alcoholic (N=122). Included are data on effects of age (schizophrenics: under 40 vs over 40; geriatrics: 55-69 vs 70 and over; alcoholics: under 45 vs over 45) and marital status (married and living with spouse vs others). Excluded were forensic patients, juveniles, hospital transfers in or out, schizophrenic and alcoholic deaths in hospital (rare), and geriatric deaths in hospital within one month of admission. Geriatric dispositions to nursing homes were counted as remaining in hospital.
Geriatric mortality rate in hospital was 33% first year, 51% in four years.
Overall results for each cohort are summarized in Tables 1 and 2.
