This book is an Englishman's version of Spock written for Punch. Each of the 31 chapters is filled with a few gems. For example, "the easiest and quickest way to feed twins on the breast is to feed them simultaneously" or "there is nothing to choose between the various dried foods except in price." The value of the book lies in the attention to phenomena that are usually ignored in books directed at the pediatrician. For example, there are chapters on "Sleep Problems," "Crying and Temper Tantrums," "Body Manipulations," "Toys and Play," "Prevention of Accidents," etc, each of which has a rather wholesome, tolerant point of view with sympathy for the child, culminating in a lovely quote from Ogden Nash (page 210) on the annoying characteristics of the developing child.
