Dr. Orr, a distinguished psychiatrist and psychoanalyst has been, in addition to his clinical activities, a teacher and a consultant to counselors for most of his professional life. He has acquired a backlog of experiences and skills which he sets down in this textbook for counselors of all disciplines. There are a wide variety of persons involved in the task of counseling—from pastors to psychiatrists. Their professional backgrounds are not as important as their knowledge of the people they try to help, the settings in which the process occurs, their understanding of the client's problems and, finally, the techniques of counseling. Dr. Orr sets forth the basic principles of these elements in an easily read, well-written book containing many clinical vignettes illustrating important procedures and with succinct summarizing outlines.
