This study is an interdisplinary investigation into psychological processes in schizophrenic adaptation, as evaluated by the psychiatric clinical method and the psychological testing method. With a sample of 18 children resident at the Orthogenic School of the University of Chicago, the author undertook a study built on clinical ratings of behavior made by psychiatrists and diagnostic Rorschach test evaluations made by psychologists in an attempt to correlate clinical ratings and Rorschach test results.

The current study replicates an earlier work of Beck's, The Six Schizophrenias: Reaction Patterns in Children and Adults, published in 1954, which had identified certain differentiated reaction patterns among Michael Reese Hospital patients, adults and children, who had been diagnosed as schizophrenic. The same research method used in the Michael Reese research was applied to the Orthogenic School sample.
