This monograph written by a wife and husband team of psychologist who teach and practice intensive psychotherapy is a scholarly product developed from a vast experience, much serious thinking, and a knowledge of the literature of several sciences. Evolution in the authors' concept is phylogenetic as well as ontogenetic and is an attempt to answer questions rarely raised by dynamic psychiatrists. The concept of ego indeed is related to the meaning and functions of an essentially human attribute which can be understood more clearly from the processes of evolution.

As they state, "the ego's reality is perceptible in its coordinating function which makes of all reality an inner subjective experience." The ego then as an aspect of reality is evolving constantly and is increasingly closing the gap between illusion and reality. Yet there are no finalistic goals since adaptation must be continuous.
