It is a pleasure to review a report of a doubleblind drug study which is as clearly conceived, executed, and analyzed as the one presented by Drs. Hordern, Burt, and Holt. Their research design shows a sophistication which is matched by the lucidity of their reporting.

After a discussion of the epidemiology, physical treatment, and pharmacotherapy of depressions, they describe their investigation comparing the effectiveness of imipramine (Tofranil) and amitriptyline (Elavil, Tryptizol, and Tryptanol). The study was carried out at the Royal Park Psychiatric Hospital in Melbourne which is a 240 bed, early treatment center for psychiatric illness serving a metropolitan and rural area of approximately 1,000,000 people. The study was limited to female depressives for purposes of homogeneity and consisted of 137 hospitalized depressive patients (the total number admitted who met their criteria), divided into two groups.
