This is a fascinating book. It is an original one dealing with the study of four different kinds of characters: obsessive-compulsive, paranoid, hysterical, and impulsive. Robert P. Knight in his foreword considered it to be the Austin Riggs Center Monograph Number 5 and states "I venture to predict that Neurotic Styles will come to be widely regarded as an outstanding contribution to psychoanalytic ego psychology and characterology."
Indeed, Dr. Shapiro, a psychologist with extensive experience in psychotherapy and clinical psychology succeeds admirably in fulfilling the purpose of the book. He discusses in a clear and highly descriptive language the modes of activity, ways of thinking and perceiving, and behavioral manifestations of four "styles" of neurosis. Explanations are enhanced by pertinent case material which obviate the need for further elaboration and illustration. The monograph is lucidly and scholarly written and is divided into seven sections.
