This book presents the proceedings of the symposium on "Physiological, Pharmacological and Clinical Aspects of Sleep," in Zurich, Switzerland, 1964. The book is dedicated to Prof W. R. Hess, whose early work with implanted electrodes initiated much of the research in this field. The objective of the symposium was to present basic information on present knowledge of the nature and regulation of sleep in the context of the total clinical and biological problem. For this purpose the symposium was divided into five sections: the first two dealing with experimental studies; the third, with clinical aspects; and the fourth, with pharmacological aspects. The fifth section consists of two brief summary statements, in the first of which, Dr. Moruzzi of Pisa, Italy, raises the question of the functions of sleep for the organism as a whole.
