This book presents an effort to integrate knowledge of verbal behavior, drawn from a wide variety of sources, with the goal of developing a model for the analysis of verbal behavior. Beginning with a concept of how words are related to psychological and social processes, the developments in Gestalt psychology which lead to a "field theory" of language are introduced as a theoretical basis for the formation of a system of categories. The experimental work of the word associationists demonstrates that there are hierarchies of responses to a word stimulus, with associations occurring on a continuum.
