The Scientific Basis of Drug Therapy in Psychiatry is the proceedings of a symposium held at St. Bartholomew's Hospital, London in September 1964. The subject matter is no doubt one of the most recent and rapidly developing fields in medicine.

There are 14 papers arranged in five sessions. The five sessions are titled: (1) basic concepts; (2) major tranquilizers; (3) antidepressants; (4) antianxiety compounds; and (5) general considerations.

The anatomy and physiology of the emotions and their relation to psychoactive drugs have been reviewed by Harold Himwich in the light of the recent advances in neuroanatomy and neurochemistry. He has also surveyed the progress being made in our understanding of the locus and mode of action of CNS drugs.
