This is a much-needed book which may serve for many institutions as a practical guide to the inpatient management of adolescents. The authors, recognizing and citing statistics regarding the growing future needs for hospitalization and adequate techniques for management of this age group, describe the Lafayette Hospital experience. Beckett's monograph has a central theme and philosophy and hopes to convince heretofore reluctant institutions of the possible successful treatment of disturbed and acting out adolescents.
The central theme of management is the utilization of external controls and limit setting and to use these firmly and consistently and nonpunitively while the youngster gradually begins to explore the meaning of his behavior and, through psychotherapy, to implement his own personal inner controls.
