IN this paper we wish to call attention to one aspect of the student nurse's motivation to enter the field of nursing to show how it can lead at times to difficulty during the course of study, to offer tentative suggestions to admission committees enabling them to identify those students whose applications require more careful scrutiny for psychological difficulties, and to make a further contribution to the understanding of career choice.

The Kings County Hospital Center School of Nursing is one of the largest in this section of the country. It was established in 1897 as an integral part of Kings County Hospital (KCH), and is now the principal clinical teaching center for the State University of New York Downstate College of Medicine.
