The present volume contains the edited proceedings of a symposium held at Middlesex Hospital, London, Jan 6 to 8, 1964. A total of 31 papers and 32 abbreviated discussions by the participants of the symposium are presented. Subjects range from public relations to nurses' training, from the treatment of long-term schizophrenic patients to that of the elderly demented, from rehabilitation and resettlement to structural attempts at uniting the staffs of mental hospitals with the staffs of psychiatric units in general hospitals. Unfortunately, the value of the volume to the American psychiatrist is severely limited. While excitement and a burning desire to return patients to a useful community life pervades many of the papers, a knowledge of the social and psychiatric scene in England is a prerequisite for following many of the papers reporting specific solutions to specific problems in specific
