This is the sixth of the colloquia organized by Henri Ey in his service at Bonneval, held in 1960. The participants were psychoanalysts, psychiatrists, and philosophers. The texts have been extensively rewritten in the intervening six years without completely eliminating the often polemical attitudes of the authors, explicable by the nature of the material dealt with.

There are two preliminary discourses: one by the editor, in which he tries to define the subject of the colloquium, and the other by André Green, in which he makes brief summaries and critiques of the various viewpoints to be developed, namely (1) the freudian, which he says the philosophers are beginning to cease to reject, (2) the neurobiological, which fails to get down to the roots of the problem, (3) the socioanthropological, which remains in suspense,(4) the philosophical, which tries to situate the problem of the unconscious . . .
