The 21st volume of this annual publication continues the original format, which includes a melange of original papers. There are contributions to theory, clinical contributions, papers on normal and pathological development, diagnostic profiles, and pathobiography. No special contribution can be singled out as good or worse than average. What makes this volume unusual and exciting is "A Short History of Child Analysis" by Anna Freud, presented at the first scientific meeting of the American Association for Child Psychoanalysis. It is a gem from which I quote a short excerpt that should be framed and hung over the desk of the Director of every Psychoanalytic Institute: "... students are from the beginning of their training systematically introduced to psychoanalysis as a method of treatment; as a tool to use for exploration and study; as a theory in need of scrutiny and expansion; as . . .
