An Outline of Preventive Psychiatric Programs for Children

AS A RESULT of the Community Mental Health Centers Acts of 1963 and 1964, states and communities have now completed an assessment of the extent of mental disorder and of the facilities, programs, and manpower available to cope with the need. The outstanding finding is that the need is so enormous and facilities so limited, manpower so scarce, and programs so expensive, that it is impossible to simply continue the present approaches and institute more programs to do more of the same. Although there is certainly a need for more services, there is an even more urgent need for other approaches that will help with the growing need and limited manpower.
