Dr. Fritz Redl has worked with children for over 30 years. This volume is a distillation of papers and books written during that time; it is the personal statement of a long and rich professional career. Most of Dr. Redl's work has been clinical and administrative: he is particularly experienced with groups, milieu, education, and management of difficult cases. When We Deal With Children seems chiefly addressed to workers coping with similar problems. The main theoretical orientation is psychoanalytic.

The introductory paper, "Crisis in the Children's Field," was written as a presidential address to the American Orthopsychiatric Association.
