This collection of the Leo M. Franklin lectures given at Wayne State University is compiled by Professor Ross Stagner, who introduces each lecture, comments on each topic, and summarizes the result with a concluding chapter. He attempts to highlight the title of the book by developing a yard-stick or scale on which differing conflicts can be compared.
There are five lectures: on the family, by Emily Mudd and Sarah Taubin; on racial conflict, by Edmund Gordon; on industrial conflict, by William Simkin; and on international conflict, by James Blake. The concluding lecture by Ross Stagner is on the analysis of conflict. Here is where a critical review of the book's essence would be pertinent. However, one must first come to grips with the fact that this is probably not really a book, but rather a heroic effort to string together some uneven and disparate comments on quite different levels.
