This compilation of five excellent reviews successfully fills a void in an area that desperately needs elucidation through objective investigation. Recognition of the need, ultimately resulting in this volume, first arose as a result of the early efforts of a collaborative project that sought to determine the etiology of neurological and developmental disorders, sponsored and generously supported by the National Institute of Neurological Diseases and Blindness. The basic objective of this project was to study gravidas prospectively in exquisite detail to determine, if possible, the effects of myriad factors on pregnancy outcome. There is little doubt that this aim was lofty and wellintentioned. The methodologic approach was correctly expected to develop such complexities that directed study planning was deemed essential.
