Prediction of response to drug therapy is of great importance in clinical medicine. For various reasons, in psychiatry it has not advanced to the level it did in other branches of medicine. Part of the reason for this may be found in the preoccupation with psychopathology, psychodynamics, and psychophysiology with less attention being paid, at least until recently, to pharmacotherapy. To quote Philip R.A. May,

The rapidly developing field of neuropsychopharmacology has raised serious problems for the clinician who has to decide the treatment of choice for a particular patient, and to a large extent, this new field is responsible for the interest in prediction, and for the increased uses of scientific research methodology in psychiatry.
