In 1946 the Group for the Advancement of Psychiatry entered into existence with the following aims: 1. To collect and appraise significant data in the field of psychiatry, mental health, and human relations 2. To reevaluate old concepts and to develop and test new ones 3. To apply the knowledge thus obtained for the promotion of mental health and good human relations

Today this organization has a membership of about 185 psychiatrists, working in about twenty committees, which meet twice yearly for three days and correspond, work, and write all during the year. In addition, symposiums are held on one day of many meetings to discuss topical subjects. Guests, consultants, special visiting persons, and fellows also attend the meetings and contribute to the deliberations.
