In June 1968 the Rutgers Interdisciplinary Research Center held a three-day conference at Rutgers University on drug abuse, with more than 150 participants representing practically every discipline or group in the United States concerned with this problem. This volume, made up of papers contributed by 47 of these participants, constitutes the best compendium of reliable information now available. This is not to say that all the contributors are in agreement on the issues involved, but rather that many and varying points of view are presented clearly and concisely.
The chapter by Henry Brill dealing with recurrent patterns in the history of drug dependence should be required reading for anyone who wishes not only to be well informed but also to keep a respectable balance between concern and over-reaction as he works in programs of drug education.
