To the Editor.

— As fans of the Vonneguts, we were pleased to see Mark given an accurate repeated diagnosis by North and Cadoret. However, a careful reading of The Eden Express¹ will show that in fact Mark Vonnegut did meet criteria 1 (poor appetite or weight loss) and criteria 8 (death or suicide thoughts) for depression. North and Cadoret indicate (p 135) that these two symptoms were not described by Vonnegut.

If they look at pages 152 to 155 of the Bantam Books edition, they will note, in regard to appetite disturbance, Twelve days without food...hand't done wonders for my physique... I looked a lot like pictures of regfugees from Hitler's concentration camps... I wasn't alarmed by the weight loss as amazed...death by starvation wasn't a farfetched possibilility...
