— We wish to correct an error in a prior publication of ours, as well as to update data regarding lithium carbonate maintenance therapy in depression. In 1976, we reported¹ that lithium carbonate maintenance therapy was significantly better than placebo in preventing hypormanic episodes among patients with bipolar depression and hypomania. These results, for a 15-month trial of lithium carbonate maintenance therapy in 26 patients with nonrapid-cycling bipolar II disease, noted a mean of 0.18 hypomanic episodes per patient-year in the group receiving placebo and 0.0 in the group receiving lithium carbonate . . .
