To the Editor.
— We wish to correct an error in a prior publication of ours, as well as to update data regarding lithium carbonate maintenance therapy in depression. In 1976, we reported1 that lithium carbonate maintenance therapy was significantly better than placebo in preventing hypormanic episodes among patients with bipolar depression and hypomania. These results, for a 15-month trial of lithium carbonate maintenance therapy in 26 patients with nonrapid-cycling bipolar II disease, noted a mean of 0.18 hypomanic episodes per patient-year in the group receiving placebo and 0.0 in the group receiving lithium carbonate
