—Soloff and Ulrich's recent article (ARCHIVES 1981;38:686-692) on the borderline syndrome is well written and demonstrates that their method can distinguish these patients from those with schizophrenia and major affective disorders.

Regretably, Soloff and Ulrich apparently did not perform a complete differential diagnosis on their patients with borderline disorders.^1-2 They are careful to note that the schizophrenics and patients with major affective disorders were diagnosed by Research Diagnostic Criteria (RDC).¹ The screening of the cases with borderline syndrome, however, resulted in seven cases being dropped for "histrionic, schizoid, sciopathic, passive-aggressive, and narcissistic character disorders."
