A Step-Process of Inpatient Psychotherapy

The transfer of a hospital patient from one nursing unit to another induces responses which are of significant value as a step-process in psychotherapy. The transfer involves hospital personnel, patient, and therapist interrelationships.

The phases of this transaction of most immediate interest to this study were the following: 1. The effect the transfer has upon the patient (a) As evidenced by directly observable changes in behavior and attitude relating to his own problems or to the roles of the therapist (b) As evidenced by changes in behavior and attitudes manifestly related to the personnel and patients on the unit departed from, or receiving, the patient 2. The factors influencing the decision of the transfer, its initiation and method of administration as it appears to the therapist and patient; the expected results to be compared with the observed responses of the patient
