Publication of this book will fan sparks of happy memory for many psychiatrists of the post-World War II generation, for whom the first edition served as an inspiration and tonic. At that time, the air was full of enthusiasm, challenge, and promise of things to come. This new edition revives that feeling. It is an exciting book, full of vitality and intensity, coupled with strong underlying optimism. Saul obviously cares about people. He feels deep concern about the social consequences of psychopathology. And he stresses the necessity for prompt and effective application of rational psychodynamic principles to deal with these problems, believing that with energy and earnest understanding, solutions will be found.
