Dr Goldberg raises issues in regard both to the design of the NIMH Treatment of Depression Collaborative Research Program and to the interpretation of the initial findings presented at the American Psychiatric Association meetings. I will respond at this time only to issues about the design of the study as described in the March 1985 issue of the Archives. Issues related to the interpretation of findings might better be addressed after Dr Goldberg and others have had an opportunity to examine the findings when they are published rather than on the basis of initial presentations and unsolicited press reports.
It must be emphasized that this study was not intended to compare generic psychotherapy with generic pharmacotherapy, a question not easily amenable to scientific inquiry.
