We note with interest the letter of Drs Barnes and Jones. Although it may not be clear from reading our 1990 report,¹ the protocol required that even though IPT was discontinued in those patients assigned to the medication clinic visit condition, the relationship with their interpersonal therapist was not. Throughout the maintenance phase of this study, patients in the medication clinic visit condition continued to meet on a monthly basis with the same individual who had been their interpersonal therapist during the acute and continuation phases; however, the nature of the therapeutic interaction changed. Those assigned to the medication clinic visit condition spent approximately 20 minutes (vs the 45 minutes allotted for the maintenance IPT sessions) reviewing with their therapist any depressive or somatic symptoms they might have experienced in the previous month.
