During the past year, I have begun the daunting task of editing the ARCHIVES. The journal has had three editors. My predecessors, Roy R. Grinker, Sr, MD (1959-1969), and Daniel X. Freedman, MD (1970-1993), were men I knew and revered.

Some have asked how the journal acquired its name. In 1959, when the Archives of Neurology and Psychiatry was split into two separate journals for each specialty, Roy Grinker decided that the title of the psychiatry journal must contain the word "general" because he fervently believed that the role of the ARCHIVES was to cover all areas of psychiatry. In that spirit we will continue—and attempt to broaden—the coverage of the ARCHIVES to include all perspectives of our field: biological, psychological, and social.
