THE COLLECTION of psychotherapy and pharmacotherapy articles in this issue represents 1 part of a 2-part series, conjointly published by the Archives of General Psychiatry and the Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology. The idea for this series was conceived when the editors of these 2 journals met at a retreat sponsored by the National Institute of Mental Health for journal editors. One topic of discussion was the then-impending specter of nationalized health care. As editors of behavioral science journals, we found that we shared a common interest in ensuring that any national mental health care program would embody the treatments that have been shown in sound research studies to be effective and efficient. In the intervening time, the press of impending nationalized health care has waned, but our enthusiasm for the issues involved and for this joint project has not.
