The author remarks that multiplicity of therapeutic possibilities and the steadily increasing number of psychotropic drugs make it difficult for the psychiatrist to assess their comparative value and indications on the basis of his own observations. Even in a specialized clinic it is difficult to test even the common preparations on the market. The technique of such comparative studies is complicated. It has been proposed that the indications for therapy could be based on certain target symptoms. It seems better to utilize the diagnostic classification also. A more fundamental method has been worked out by Bente, Engelmeier, Heinrich, Hippius, and W. Schmitt and is used in many German clinics. Several psychopathological findings (as well as their duration), age, sex, heredity, constitution, somatic symptoms, anterior and accompanying diseases, psychoreactive factors, and the social milieu are scrutinized.
