This monograph is in 2 parts. The first part is a catamnestic study of 299 patients on whom a frontal leukotomy had been made by the standard Freeman-Watts method. Of these patients 255 were schizophrenics, 21 of whom were also mentally defective; the remainder were of various categories, too few of any one to be significant. The mortality of operation was 5%; 3.7% had postsurgical epileptic attacks. Of the schizophrenic group 26.6% were improved, 8.4% were worse, 48.2% were unaltered, and 16.8% showed slight transitory improvement. Since the time elapsed since operation varied from 1 to 12 years these figures do not have much meaning.

The second part is concerned with anatomoclinical correlation based on 32 patients who died at some time before the study was completed.
