In the 1950-1960 decade, at least 18 symposia on brain and behavior appeared in print. Many of these were published with a dearth of editing, occasionally retaining dubiously edifying discussions. The present volume, in part the proceedings of the Symposium on Brain Stimulation held at the Texas Medical Center in 1956, is more adequately edited. The articles tend to be reasonably thorough, although there is an unevenness in the quality of presentation. An excellent bibliography of recent articles and books is appended. Since the book was originally slated for publication in 1958, much of the included material, particularly the experimental contributions, has appeared elsewhere, and the freshness has been lost. While editing of symposia is often avoided in favor of the advantages of extremely rapid publication, the additional pains taken by Sheer do not quite offset the unconscionably long delay in a science which sees extreme changes
