The present volume is the second of a trilogy entitled The Psychoanalytic Series, in which Dr. Fliess attempts to extend some aspects of both the analytic technique and metapsychology of Freud. Why Dr. Fliess entitled this book: Ego and Body Ego is difficult to understand. "The title of this present volume is likely to raise expectations that it cannot fulfill," he writes in his foreword, and he might well have avoided thus to mislead his readers. What he concerns himself with, in this volume, represents additions and innovations with regard to psychoanalytic technique and to Freudian metapsychology, which are created, not so much to clarify or explicate earlier formulations of Freud, but rather to explain more clearly and more completely, as well as differently and more neologistically, "clinical observations that were not understood before."
