A composite portrait of the truly dynamic and dedicated author of this inspiring book would probably reveal the features of an Albert Schweitzer and a Frieda Fromm-Reichmann blended into her own. There are and have been other humanitarians who have devoted their lives to the selfless task of helping the socioeconomically destitute and deprived; there are other educational therapists like Bruno Bettelheim who are in a position, however, of being able to select the very sick emotionally disturbed children whom they treat; but Dr. Riese has the distinction of having developed treatment resources for all varieties of cases of distorted and arrested emotional development in the most neglected fringe subculture in her community.
