The Research Objectives
The project was launched in 1950 and was carried on continuously through 1962, except for a two-year interruption (1957-1959). Initially, the objectives were: (1) to determine the critical periods of an infant's life when language learning begins and (2) to determine the significance of maternal attitudes and activities on the rate of language development. Rather soon after the project got under way the objectives were broadened to the study of the more general question of: the influence of maternal attitudes on childhood development, with specific reference to the influence of neurotic maternal attitudes on childhood development. Still later, and finally, the objectives were narrowed down to the study of: the influence of neurotic maternal attitudes on the development of mental retardation in children, with particular reference to language development.
