Prediction of Underachievement in Kindergarten Children

Introduction

The school child who is an underachiever is a problem and a challenge to his teacher. In an attempt to acquire more knowledge about the child who does not learn up to his IQ potential a team consisting of a school principal, a kindergarten teacher, a first grade teacher, a psychologist, and a child psychiatrist conducted a continuing study during the school months from September, 1957, through June, 1961.

The study took place at Frankford Friends School, Philadelphia. This school is under the care of the Frankford Monthly Meeting of the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers). There are approximately two dozen Friends schools in the greater Philadelphia area, most of them founded well over a century ago with the goal of developing "an attitude of courageous independence, a readiness for responsibility, and a spiritual basis for life."
