The Swiss author of this book is a leading figure in the school loosely called Existential Psychiatry, which is highly influential in contemporary European Psychiatry. He is a practicing analyst, Professor of Psychotherapy at the University of Zurich, and furnishes inspiration for a large vigorous group of followers. His training as a Freudian analyst makes him well qualified to compare the two movements. The term "Daseinsanalysis" refers to the author's personal interpretation of psychoanalytic theory and practice, using the philosophical approach of Martin Heidegger, with whom Boss has frequent theoretical and philosophical discussions.

Heidegger (1889-) was a student of Edmund Husserl (1859-1938), the father of phenomenology, who tried to use an absolutely unbiased approach to all phenomena. Heidegger, using the methodology of Husserl and building on the speculations of Kierkegaard and Nietzsche, published in 1927 his work, "Being and Time," which attempted to gain a new understanding of man. . . .
